The Christmas Gift My Son Really Wanted!

It was nearly Christmas. My kids were more interested in the TV ads than the TV shows. All those amazing toys!

There was one present I knew my oldest son, who must have been around 9 years old at the time, longed for. It was an electronic circuits set. It looked fantastic. I longed to be able to buy it for him, but we just weren’t spending that kind of money on each of our kids.

I remember one morning just saying to God, “Oh, God, I’d love to be able to get that set for Josh.” I didn’t think anything else of it, but went out to the local shops to do some grocery shopping.

There was one shop, a second-hand charity shop, that I often frequented. It was a great place for bargains. As I walked past that morning, I suddenly stopped, amazed.

There right outside the shop, among a pile of well-used items, was an electronic circuits set. A large one. It looked new! And it was a fraction of the price of those I’d seen advertised. I couldn’t believe it! I’d never seen anything like it in a charity shop before, and at such a cheap price.

Of course I bought it, and hurried home to check it all over. Every single piece was there, intact, unused. And most importantly, it all worked!

What a gift. I sat on my bed and cried. That God knew both my longing and my son’s. I was overwhelmed with God’s love and care.

Years later, and we still have the same set. It’s just come out again for another round of play.

Years later, and I am reminded of that verse, “You have not because you ask not.” James 4:2.

Sometimes it is just that simple. Pour out your longings to God. He loves to bless!
